ABOUT

A taste of Western Canada, served with warmth and mountain soul.

Cabin Kitchen + Bar is where prairie winters, Okanagan summers, and coastal influences come together on one table. Built on the food I grew up on—and the food I still love today—Cabin is meant to feel like stepping into my home. A place where the fire is warm, the drinks are thoughtful, and the ingredients come from the friends and makers who shape this region.

Our menu leans into the heart of Canadian comfort: Alberta beef and bison from the plains, vegetables grown in our valley soil, seafood landed on our coastlines, and cheeses, ciders, beers, wines, and spirits crafted by people I’ve known and worked with for years.
These aren’t just suppliers—they’re neighbours, collaborators, and friends.

Whether you’re here after a long ski day, settling in with family, celebrating something special, or just stopping by for a quiet drink at the bar, Cabin is designed to feel personal. Familiar. A little nostalgic. And always welcoming.

Thanks for joining us in the mountains.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Mountain comfort. Canadian soul. A room that feels like coming home.

A Warm, Mountain Welcome

Think ski-lodge energy meets your friend’s cozy cabin. Wood, warmth, soft light, and a room full of people who actually look happy to be here. No fuss. No ego. Just comfort.

Food That’s Familiar — But Better

Classic Canadian dishes rooted in the prairies, mountains, and coast.
Alberta beef, Manitoba bison, Okanagan vegetables, Pacific seafood, local cheeses, and the Ukrainian + French Canadian flavours from Ross’s childhood.
It’s nostalgic, hearty, and honest — made with intention.

Ingredients from People We Know

We don’t just buy local — we buy from friends.
Farmers, foragers, ranchers, cheesemakers, distillers, cider makers, and winemakers we’ve cooked beside for years.
Their work is on your plate and in your glass.

A Beverage List with a Sense of Place

Cocktails inspired by Big White ski runs.
Wines crafted by neighbours.
Spirits from small producers who pour their heart into every bottle.
Everything chosen to taste like here.

A Room Built for Real Life

Ski boots welcome.
Families welcome.
Locals, visitors, first dates, celebrations — all welcome.
Cabin is meant to hold whatever kind of night you’re having.

Genuine Hospitality

We greet you the way Ross grew up greeting people at home:
with warmth, with honesty, and without overthinking it.

A Bit of Nostalgia, A Lot of Heart

From Great Grandma Alice’s recipes to prairie comfort dishes to mountain touches throughout the space, Cabin tells a story — and invites you into our cabin!

THE OWNER

Ross Derrick

Ross Derrick is a chef, restaurateur, and community builder whose career has been shaped by the landscapes and food traditions of Western Canada. Raised between the cold prairie winters of Manitoba and the lake-filled summers of British Columbia, Ross grew up surrounded by the dishes, people, and stories that now define his cooking.

Ross began his culinary path with a simple goal: to cook honest, memorable food that feels like home. Over the years, he has become known for championing local producers, working directly with ranchers, foragers, fishermen, cheesemakers, distillers, and winemakers throughout the Okanagan and beyond. Many of the ingredients on his menus come from people he calls friends—relationships built through shared values, shared meals, and shared work.

As the owner of Derrick’s Steakhouse, Broken Anchor Kitchen + Catering, and now Cabin Kitchen + Bar at Big White Ski Resort, Ross has built a family of hospitality spaces rooted in comfort, community, and a deep respect for Canadian ingredients. Cabin represents a return to his culinary origins: prairie warmth, coastal influence, and mountain living woven together into a menu that feels familiar, yet thoughtfully crafted.

Ross’s food is shaped by heritage—French Canadian, Ukrainian, and the broader Canadian landscape—and by a belief that restaurants should feel personal. His menus often nod to the dishes he grew up eating, including his Great Grandma Alice’s recipes, and he continues to blend classic comfort with modern technique.

Beyond the kitchen, Ross is known for his generosity, mentorship, and commitment to local food culture. He works closely with producers across the Okanagan, celebrates regional wine and spirits, and helps shape the culinary voice of his community through events, collaborations, and education.

At Cabin Kitchen + Bar, Ross welcomes guests the same way he grew up welcoming people into his home—warmly, fully, and with the belief that good food and good company make a room come alive.
